Oldest Brewing School In The US Leaving For Canada, Citing Trump Visa Restrictions

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Siebel Institute of Technology, the oldest brewing school in the U. S. , will move from Chicago to Montreal on January 1, citing financial pressures and new student visa restrictions. The majority of its students are international, making U. S.

visa changes particularly impactful. Director of Education John Hannafan emphasized the need to maintain quality education while keeping programs affordable. Founded in 1868, the institute has undergone various relocations, most recently to its current Chicago location in 2019. Financial struggles intensified during the pandemic, prompting reliance on support from parent company Lallemand Inc. The move will coincide with the launch of Lallemand’s Baking Academy and Application Technology Training Facility in Montreal.

This shift not only addresses the institute's operational challenges but also reflects a significant change in the landscape of brewing education in North America. As international students face stricter visa regulations, educational institutions are compelled to adapt to ensure accessibility and sustainability.
