What Will Lakeview Look Like In 10 Years? New Community Plan Offers A Roadmap
Ald. Bennett Lawson of Lakeview has introduced a community plan designed to manage the neighborhood's growth while maintaining its historic character. The plan was developed through extensive public input, revealing residents' desire for more housing, particularly near transit. With over 60% of homes built before 1970 and a high occupancy rate of 93%, the demand for housing is pressing. Lawson's guidelines propose eliminating parking minimums and expediting the rehabilitation of older buildings to facilitate growth.
The four vacant parcels from the CTA's Red and Purple modernization present an opportunity for implementing these changes. Residents prioritized preserving three- and four-flats, essential for affordable housing options. The plan aims to balance increased density with the preservation of Lakeview's unique charm. Lawson emphasizes that development should enhance rather than overwhelm the neighborhood's character.
