Illinois Rolls Out Digital Driver's Licenses, ID Cards
Illinois residents can now add their driver’s licenses and state ID cards to their iPhones, a feature announced by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. This digital ID capability will soon extend to Android devices, allowing users to manage their identification through their mobile wallets. The digital IDs can be utilized online and at select businesses, including security checkpoints at 250 airports, such as Midway and O’Hare. To assist businesses, a free mobile app will be available to verify digital IDs for age-restricted purchases like alcohol. Giannoulias highlighted that this launch merges security, privacy, and convenience, making life easier for millions.
The legislation enabling digital IDs passed last year, with state Rep. Kam Buckner as a chief sponsor. While the digital IDs modernize identification, residents should still carry physical IDs, as law enforcement is not mandated to accept digital versions. This initiative places Illinois among 12 states and Puerto Rico that allow digital identification.
