Volumes Bookcafe Closing In January After Decade In Wicker Park
Volumes Bookcafe, a cherished independent bookstore and coffee shop in Wicker Park, will close its doors permanently in January after nearly ten years of serving the community. The closure announcement came from co-owner Rebecca George, who cited a 20-30% decline in sales since Barnes & Noble opened nearby, directly impacting their business. Originally opened in March 2016, Volumes quickly became a community hub, hosting events and book clubs. The decision to close has been described as emotional but necessary, especially as the sisters have not taken salaries recently and are facing rising health insurance costs. The store plans to operate normally during the holiday season, which is historically their busiest time.
After Christmas, they will begin to sell off inventory, including books and cafe equipment, before closing permanently by the end of January. The Georges aim to honor the community that has supported them throughout the years. Rebecca expressed hope for the future but lamented the loss of daily interactions with customers.
