Lakefront Edgewater Synagogue's Redevelopment Could Include Multiple Apartment Towers

Chicago, ILLocal News

Emanuel Congregation in Edgewater is moving forward with plans to redevelop its lakefront campus, which could include multiple apartment towers to help finance a new synagogue. Developer Fern Hill presented 16 potential designs, showcasing one, two, and three-tower projects at a recent meeting with congregation leaders. The neighboring site at 5950 N. Sheridan Road, acquired for $5 million, might serve as a temporary synagogue during construction. The existing synagogue, built in 1955, is too large and inefficient for its current membership of about 250 households.

Plans for the new building feature improved lakefront views and a more functional design. Zoning changes are essential due to the current structure's noncompliance with modern regulations and its proximity to Lake Michigan. Community engagement will play a significant role in shaping the final development options. Further outreach is planned to gauge local preferences and refine the project's direction.
