Austin's Black History Museum, Education Center Opens On North Avenue

The Future Drive Empowerment Center opened last month at 6914 W. North Ave. to celebrate Black history and support West Side youth. The facility features a wall of fame highlighting African American contributions in sports, broadcasting, and civil rights. A significant exhibit is dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr.

, showcasing his impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Administrator Natasha Hall noted the center's commitment to addressing community violence through education and engagement. Future programming will include financial literacy seminars and after-school initiatives. Founder Jimmie Gardner was motivated to establish the center after observing educational disparities in a youth competition. The center began in Gardner's basement in 2020, later moving to a renovated law office.

Gardner aims to combat the erosion of Black history in education, responding to national discussions about curriculum changes.
