Filming ICE Detention Of Man With Schizophrenia Left Bystander 'Trembling'

Chicago, ILLocal News

On October 15, federal agents detained Omar Huerta Cisneros, a permanent U. S. resident with schizophrenia, in Chicago Lawn as he walked to a grocery store. Bystander Edgar Manzo recorded the swift arrest, believing it was important to document the incident. His video became crucial evidence for Cisneros' family, who spent two weeks searching for him without help from immigration agencies.

They faced challenges reaching out to officials and even congressional representatives without success. Eventually, family members located him near a Walgreens, suspecting he was dropped off by agents. Cisneros’ sister-in-law, Araceli Favela, emphasized his inability to communicate due to his condition, stating he lacks a cellphone and cannot recall phone numbers. The family's plight highlights the difficulties faced by individuals with mental health issues in immigration situations. The lack of communication from federal officials during this ordeal amplified their distress.
