West Side's Soul Food Lounge Offers Weekly Free Meals To Help Those Cut Off From SNAP

Chicago, ILLocal News

Quentin Love, the owner of The Soul Food Lounge in North Lawndale, will serve free meals every Tuesday from noon to 3 p. m. to help those affected by the suspension of SNAP benefits, which has left nearly 2 million Illinois residents without food assistance. Love's call for other restaurants to join him reflects a growing concern over food insecurity amid the government shutdown. He emphasizes that "everyone deserves a nutritious meal" and believes that restaurant owners have a responsibility to support marginalized communities.

In response to the crisis, Illinois is one of 25 states suing the federal government for emergency funding to restore SNAP benefits. Nonprofit food pantries, already strained by rising demand, may not have sufficient resources to meet the needs of those losing benefits. Love's initiative will operate without requiring proof of SNAP status, relying on volunteers and his staff to prepare meals. He has previously organized food drives and provided free meals at his former restaurant, Turkey Chop. The need for community action is urgent, as Love warns that hunger can lead to increased violence in vulnerable neighborhoods.
