West Loop Apartment Plan Needs Neighborhood Group's OK, But They Want More Parking
The proposed five-story, 66-unit apartment development at 1201 W. Kinzie St. has sparked significant community opposition over parking concerns. With just 14 planned spaces for a large building, residents argue it will worsen congestion on already crowded streets. Attendees at a recent meeting raised issues regarding the lack of green space and family-sized units, as well as the building's closeness to the Metra tracks.
Developer LG Development requires support from local organizations to advance the project, which aims to include affordable housing options. Residents have urged developers to consider alternatives for increasing parking, but suggestions for underground or additional levels were dismissed due to prohibitive costs. Scott Borstein, the developer's lawyer, cited availability of nearby garage parking as a solution, but residents remain skeptical. The Neighbors of River West have postponed a vote on the project, seeking to increase parking from 14 to 29 spaces. A follow-up community meeting is scheduled for December 1 to explore potential compromises with the developers.
