Miss Purl, A Beverly Yarn Shop That Celebrated Community Through Knitting, Will Close In November
Beverly's Miss Purl Yarn Shop will close on November 9, marking the end of a four-year journey for owner Kamaca Champion. She revealed that the closure stems from complex market challenges and a lack of adequate financial backing from the community. While the shop became a gathering place for knitters and football fans alike, it failed to convert its social impact into sufficient revenue. Champion expressed disappointment that customer support averaged only $50 twice a year, far below what was necessary to sustain the business. A “Last Stitch” sale planned for November 28-30 will serve as a farewell to the beloved shop, featuring games and craft activities.
Champion's experiences highlight the broader struggles faced by small businesses, particularly those led by marginalized individuals. She underscored the need for community engagement to ensure the survival of local enterprises. Despite the closure, she will continue her Sunday knitting sessions, maintaining connections with her loyal customers.
