Pilsen's Massive Ofrenda Returns For Da De Los Muertos

Chicago, ILLocal News

Pilsen neighbor Isabel Hernandez's ofrenda returns to honor lost loved ones during Día de los Muertos, showcasing about 400 photographs at 1340 W. 19th St. This year’s altar also includes a smaller section dedicated to 40 pets, as Hernandez believes they too are part of the family. “They don’t die completely,” she stated, emphasizing the celebration of life. The vibrant display features candles, flowers, food, and decorative skulls, drawing visitors, particularly at night when illuminated.

Many attendees have learned about the ofrenda through social media platforms like TikTok. Hernandez, a Pilsen resident for over 40 years, draws inspiration from traditional Mexican ofrendas she has visited in Mexico City. She sources decorations both locally and from her travels, reflecting the growing popularity of the holiday. The ofrenda will be available for public viewing until Sunday, free of charge.
