Lake View High Cross Country Team Fights For State Title As ICE Targets Their Community 'We're Not Hiding'

Chicago, ILLocal News

Lake View High School's boys cross country team, largely made up of young Mexican Americans, prepares for the state championship amid the backdrop of ICE operations in their neighborhood. Just before the regional tournament, fears escalated as federal agents conducted aggressive sweeps, prompting the school to keep students indoors for safety. The team finished fourth at regionals, earning a spot at sectionals, despite the distractions caused by the ongoing federal actions. Senior Omar Rios noted the struggle to focus on their goals while dealing with the reality of increased ICE presence. Assistant coach Katherine Thiele remarked on the unique characteristics of this team, which has only sent athletes to state twice in its history.

To express their pride and solidarity, the boys plan to wear matching bandanas with the Mexican flag. Coach Justine Hunter has taken precautions during training, ensuring the team remains vigilant. The situation has fostered a renewed sense of community among the athletes, as they look out for one another and strive to achieve their goals.
