Southside Market, A Grocery Co-Op And Cafe, Brings Fresh Food To Chatham At Critical Time
Southside Market and Cafe opened its doors in Chatham, significantly boosting local access to fresh, affordable food. The micro-grocery store was co-founded by Mabel Shiu and Monica Meriweather, who transformed a long-vacant storefront into a community-focused space with the help of a $240,000 community development grant. The market not only provides grocery essentials but also allows residents to buy shares for community ownership, fostering local investment. During the grand opening, community leaders highlighted the store's importance amidst ongoing challenges in the city. Razz Sharpless emphasized that neighbors shouldn't have to travel far for nutritious food.
The store features a fresh fruit stand and a cafe serving brewed coffee, teas, and juices. Shiu noted a commitment to rotating stock to keep the shopping experience fresh and engaging. The founders built trust within the community through collaboration with local organizations and outreach efforts.
