North Center's Cornservatory Theater Could Close After 25 Years Unless It Raises 10,000
Corn Productions, which runs The Cornservatory Theater in North Center, aims to raise $10,000 by November 1 to prevent closure after 25 years of operation. The nonprofit has faced financial challenges due to a decline in ticket sales and the inability to reapply for state and federal grants, according to artistic director Justin Lance. The group has raised nearly $8,300 through an online fundraiser and offers incentives for larger donations, such as naming a seat or a bathroom. Despite financial struggles, Lance affirmed that ticket prices will not increase, emphasizing the mission to make comedy accessible to all. The theater has hosted over 180 original shows and holiday sketches, maintaining a focus on affordable entertainment.
To further support fundraising efforts, Corn Productions is hosting a special comedy event titled "Almost 24-hours," where participants create and perform a sketch in under 24 hours. At the end of the year, the group plans to reapply for grants and increase ticket sales through new productions. Lance encourages the community to support local comedy by attending shows.
