Chicago, ILLocal News

Block Club Chicago launched a WhatsApp channel to deliver crucial immigration news directly to residents' phones, addressing the rapid developments related to the ongoing Midway Blitz operation. The channel will provide daily updates from staff, allowing for direct communication with readers through the WhatsApp number 312-860-0020. Collaborating with City Bureau's translation lab, the initiative aims to reach Spanish-speaking residents, who comprise a significant portion of the community. According to Pew Research Center, 46% of Hispanic Americans report daily use of WhatsApp, making it a vital communication tool. Block Club's editor noted that the channel represents their commitment to making news accessible, leveraging lessons learned from previous outreach efforts.

This project received funding from the Medill Midwest Solutions Journalism Lab, which supports sustainable local journalism. Deborah Douglas, the lab's director, highlighted their goal of fostering community-focused journalism through targeted resources. The initiative aims not only to inform but also to engage Chicagoans in critical conversations surrounding immigration.
