North Lawndales Sears Sunken Garden Breaks Ground On 5 Million Overhaul
Renovations on North Lawndale's Sears Sunken Garden have begun, with a total budget of $5 million aimed at restoring this historical community space. The project, spearheaded by Friends of the Sears Sunken Garden, will enhance accessibility and restore the garden's iconic pergola. Lynn Osmond, co-president of the Driehaus Foundation, emphasized the garden's role in community bonding since its inception in 1907. Phase 1, focusing on the pergola, is slated for completion this spring, while Phase 2 will expand the garden with stormwater management and new seating over the next 18 months. The project is part of a larger effort by the GROWSS Committee to fulfill the 2018 Quality of Life Plan for the area.
As of now, $1. 35 million has been secured, but additional fundraising is critical to meet the project's total cost. The garden's decline began after Sears relocated in the 1970s, making this restoration a significant local initiative. Community members have already started planting in new plots, signaling a revival of the garden's legacy.
