Chicago's Oldest Feline Clinic Has Been Helping Cats For 50 Years
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Chicago Cat Clinic has been a pioneer in feline veterinary care since its founding in 1975 by Barbara Stein. The clinic boasts over 9,000 active accounts, with clients traveling significant distances, including from Indiana and Wisconsin, to access its services. Stein faced considerable obstacles, such as gender bias when seeking loans to establish the clinic, which was the first of its kind in Chicago. The clinic has become a trusted place for generations of families, as noted by retired veterinarian Larissa Olenych, who saw clients return with their children and grandchildren's cats. Previously, cats were often treated like small dogs, but Stein's dedication led to advancements in understanding feline health.
The shift in attitudes towards cats as pets has paralleled the clinic's growth and success. Stein's impact extended beyond the clinic, as she consulted with zoos and lectured globally on feline medicine until her death in 1999. The Chicago Cat Clinic continues to be a testament to the importance of specialized care for cats and the legacy of its founder.
