West Side Seniors Still Struggling With Damage 2 Years After Major Flood 'The Mold Is Killing Us'
West Side seniors are still seeking help from the city two years after devastating floods damaged their homes. The group West Side Seniors plans to protest at City Hall to demand equitable aid distribution and address ongoing mold issues. Larry Quinn, a resident affected by the floods, expressed frustration over receiving only $1,900 from FEMA despite estimating repair costs at $100,000. The floods, which occurred in July 2023, led to significant damage in the area, with up to 9 inches of rain falling in just 24 hours. Organizer Princess Shaw, founder of Light Up Lawndale, has worked to educate seniors on navigating relief programs.
Only a small number of applicants have received full assistance, leaving many still struggling with health hazards in their homes. The group's upcoming demonstration aims to pressure city officials to take action and provide necessary support. Shaw insists that city leaders must understand the urgency of the situation and meet with affected residents.
