Loyola Prof Works To Destigmatize Mental Health Care Among Latinos Impacted By Immigration Blitz
Ricardo Camacho, a bilingual psychologist and Loyola professor, leads Salud, a group dedicated to enhancing mental health care access for Latino and immigrant communities in Chicago. In response to increased immigration enforcement, Camacho highlights the urgent need for collective mental health support. Salud hosts bilingual healing sessions and community talks to encourage open discussions about mental health challenges. According to a 2023 study, one in five Latinos suffers from mental illness, but only 36 percent receive adequate care. Economic barriers, cultural stigma, and a lack of understanding of mental health's impact contribute to this disparity.
Camacho aims to address these issues by fostering awareness and establishing community support networks. Recently, Salud created guides to help families discuss immigration-related topics and emotions. By meeting communities where they are, Camacho believes they can collectively navigate mental health challenges.
