In Lake Michigans Swells, A Water Polo Club Is Building More Than A Pastime

Chicago, ILLocal News

Founded in 2023, the Hickory Water Polo Club has become a thriving community hub for water polo enthusiasts in Chicago, attracting 80-90 players weekly at Oak Street Beach. Coach Chris Mulcrone, who has over four decades of experience in the sport, aims to revive interest in water polo following a decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. He believes that enhancing the quality of high school water polo will lead to more college players, ultimately benefiting Chicago's sports scene. The club's diverse membership includes high school learners and experienced veterans, fostering connections among participants. Innovations in equipment have allowed for the dream of outdoor water polo to become a reality, as Mulcrone's father had envisioned.

Newcomers like Katherine Delacey appreciate the unique challenges of open-water play, expressing excitement about returning to the sport after years away. The club's growth signals a positive trend in community engagement and physical activity. Looking ahead, organizers are considering the formation of a league to further expand water polo's reach in the region.
