Palmer Square Park Named Chicago Park Districts First Arboretum
Palmer Square Park received its designation as the Northwest Side's first arboretum from the Morton Arboretum's ArbNet Accreditation Program, making it the first Chicago Park District property to achieve this status. The nearly 8-acre park features over 200 trees, including 28 distinct species, exceeding the 25-species minimum for accreditation. The initiative to improve the park began in 1980, spearheaded by the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square, which has planted about 150 of the trees currently present. This accreditation not only emphasizes tree preservation but also opens up new opportunities for educational programs and community involvement. Steve Hier, a founding member of the association, highlighted the critical role of trees in improving air quality and providing shade.
The designation was celebrated at a local event attended by dignitaries, including Ald. Daniel La Spata. Other notable arboreta in Chicago include the Lincoln Park Zoo and Graceland Cemetery. This recognition contributes to ongoing efforts to protect urban green spaces amid climate challenges.
