Lakeviews New Affordable Housing Development Offers Independence For Residents With Disabilities

Chicago, ILLocal News

Lakeview Landing, a newly opened affordable housing development, provides 37 accessible apartments for individuals with disabilities at 835 W. Addison St. The six-story structure is designed for independent living, featuring fully accessible one-bedroom units with rents capped for households earning up to 30 percent of the area median income. Funding for the project totaled $5. 8 million from the city and the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized that Lakeview Landing exemplifies the city's commitment to affordable housing and accessibility. This development stems from a partnership between the Over the Rainbow Association and Lakeview Lutheran Church, which sought to repurpose its space due to a shrinking congregation. Over the Rainbow has been dedicated to creating independent living opportunities for over 40 years, with this project being part of a larger network of accessible housing developments. Two units in Lakeview Landing are allocated for permanent supportive housing, linking residents to essential mental health resources. The City Council approved the project in 2022, marking a significant step towards enhancing community support for individuals with disabilities.
