Vacant Chinatown Lot Could Become Riverfront Office Complex With Restaurant

Chicago, ILLocal News

Developer Mao S. Mei plans to construct a $6 million, three-story mixed-use building on a vacant lot at 944 W. Cermak Road in Chinatown. The commercial space will span 28,000 square feet and include medical offices, an adult day care, and a riverfront restaurant with 200 feet of access. The proposal features a second-floor terrace, outdoor dining areas, and on-site parking for 48 vehicles.

City officials have accepted the proposal, which still requires City Council approval. Planning Commissioner Ciere Boatright noted the project's potential to enhance community connectivity and identity in the area. The city favored this project over two alternatives that sought city funding for a school and parking. The developer plans to purchase the lot for $1. 165 million, in line with market value, with the sale anticipated in 2026.

This development reflects ongoing efforts to revitalize Chinatown and support local business growth.
