Humboldt Park Boathouse Could Get All-Day Cafe With Beer Garden
Developers propose Cafe Valera at the Humboldt Park Boathouse to revitalize the area and increase foot traffic, addressing the space's underutilization. The North Pond team, led by chef César Murillo, plans to offer grab-and-go food items, including sandwiches and empanadas, and will seek a liquor license for a beer garden. Community members expressed support during a recent meeting, although concerns about litter and trash were voiced. The Park District has been looking for a new operator since 2021, following the pandemic-induced closure of previous concessions. Renovations to the kitchen and outdoor areas will make the cafe inviting, with a focus on sustainability and local sourcing.
The team aims to employ about 22 locals and host events such as farmers markets and art pop-ups. By creating a "third space" for the community, the cafe could enhance local culture and collaboration. The boathouse's restrooms will remain open during cafe hours, which will run from early morning until 8 or 9 p. m.
