ChiArts Future In Limbo After Arts Board Votes Not To Renew CPS Contract
The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts) faces an uncertain future after its arts board decided not to renew its contract with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) due to financial difficulties. Executive Director Tina Boyer Brown and Principal Nestor Corona informed families and staff that the board will cease management after the current academic year. While this decision will not impact the ongoing school year, administrators are collaborating with CPS to develop a sustainable plan for the school's unique arts programs. ChiArts, which has been operating for 15 years, enrolls approximately 550 students, predominantly from Black and Hispanic backgrounds. The school received a “Does Not Meet Standards” rating in its financial performance, leading to its current financial remediation status until 2026.
The Chicago Teachers Union criticized the decision, noting the adverse effects on 600 families and the potential job losses for educators. ChiArts students staged a sit-in and plan further actions to voice their concerns. CPS officials stated they will engage in more discussions to ensure students' educational experiences remain stable and informed.
