Lake Street Bridge Construction Starts Soon, Closing It To Traffic For 2 Years

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Lake Street bridge in Chicago will close to all traffic for two years starting October 6 as part of a major reconstruction project. The Chicago Department of Transportation stated that the 109-year-old bridge work is expected to wrap up by early 2028. While the bridge is closed, the Green and Pink line services will remain operational, with two planned outages scheduled for fall 2026 and spring 2027. Detours will be established to manage the expected traffic disruptions caused by the closure. The construction coincides with the ongoing reconstruction of the Chicago Avenue bridge, which will continue through next year.

City officials are preparing alternative routes to ease access issues in the downtown area. The bridge's closure and the accompanying construction may impact local businesses and commuters, making it crucial for residents to stay informed about detour plans. The project aims to enhance infrastructure safety and longevity in the region.
