5-Story Apartment Building Coming To Uptowns Our Lady Of Lourdes School Lot

Chicago, ILLocal News

Ald. Matt Martin approved a zoning change for a five-story apartment building on the former Our Lady of Lourdes church campus in Uptown. The project, submitted by Honore Properties, will consist of 78 apartments, which include 16 affordable units for residents earning less than 60% of the area's median income. Additionally, the building will offer 33 off-street parking spaces and incorporate sustainable features such as dark sky lighting and a solar-ready roof. The initial proposal was for a six-story building with 96 units, which has since been revised to better complement the surrounding architecture.

The development requires further approval from the city’s Committee on Landmarks, Zoning and Building Standards before it can be voted on by the City Council. The church, which had served the community since 1892, held its final mass in May 2024, leading to significant changes in the local landscape. Honore Properties is also converting the former school building into a 42-apartment residential complex. Parishioners have formed a preservation society to advocate for the church's landmark status amid redevelopment efforts.
