Sculpture Walk Connecting Jefferson And Portage Park To Be Unveiled This Weekend

Chicago, ILLocal News

The unveiling of a sculpture walk connecting Jefferson Park and Portage Park is set for Saturday, featuring 10 sculptures along a 2-mile stretch of Milwaukee Avenue. Funded by a $300,000 grant from state Sen. Robert Martwick, the project emphasizes the role of public art in fostering community. Martwick stated, "Public art transforms neighborhoods, sparks conversation and brings people together. " The event will include guided tours and art exhibits, with local businesses distributing pamphlets detailing the sculptures and their artists.

Arts Alive President Cyd Smillie revealed that trail markers will aid in navigation, created by Indiana artists. The initiative, which has been in development for years, seeks to attract visitors to local businesses and highlight regional arts organizations. Some sculptures carry historical significance, such as the Jefferson Park War Memorial. Smillie also aims to make art more accessible, particularly for children, amid cuts to arts education.
