North Lawndales Only Record Store Blends Global Music Deep Cuts With American Classics

Chicago, ILLocal News

Discos Calidad, North Lawndale’s only record store, has become a vital community hub for Latin music lovers and residents alike. Owner Leo Guzman opened the shop two years ago, boasting a collection of around 10,000 records across various genres. Guzman, who balances a career as an engineer with his passion for DJing, credits his mother’s vinyl collection for igniting his love for music. The store features both rare Latin albums and classic American records, catering to diverse musical tastes. Guzman also organizes community events, such as the Little Lawndale Neighborhood Block Parties, fostering connection and cultural celebration.

His previous venture, Del Pueblo Barbers & Records, influenced Discos Calidad’s mission to promote Latin music and culture. The shop not only sells records but also provides a space for meetings and community healing events. Discos Calidad enriches the North Lawndale cultural scene while supporting local identity and community engagement.
