Plan To Convert Pittsfield Building Offices Into Apartments Gets City Council OK
The Chicago City Council approved a significant project to convert the Pittsfield Building's unused office space into 214 residential units, enhancing the existing 228 apartments. Owner Tom Liravongsa plans to retrofit the building, which has been under scaffolding for a decade, and will add a four-story observation deck with a cafe on the 37th floor. About 20% of the new apartments will comply with the city's Affordable Requirements Ordinance. Meanwhile, the Council also rezoned properties in Little Village to prioritize businesses over industrial use, responding to community feedback. Alderman Michael Rodriguez noted that this change enables the area to attract small businesses and reduce truck traffic.
The local advisory committee and residents unanimously supported the rezoning efforts. The adjustments reflect a shift towards more community-oriented planning, with an emphasis on residential needs. The changes are expected to improve local economic conditions and neighborhood livability.
