Starbucks Closing At Least 12 Chicago Stores This Weekend Under Nationwide Restructuring
Starbucks announced it will close approximately 1 percent of its North American locations, including several in Chicago, and will lay off around 900 corporate employees as part of a restructuring initiative. The Wicker Park Starbucks at 1588 N. Milwaukee Ave. is among the confirmed closures, having been revamped into a Reserve location in 2017. CEO Brian Niccol emphasized that the decision comes after a comprehensive review aimed at identifying unprofitable stores.
Some employees may receive transfers to nearby locations, while others will face layoffs. The closures coincide with ongoing unionization efforts among Starbucks workers advocating for improved wages and job protections. Union representatives voiced strong opposition to the closure plan, arguing it negatively impacts workers. Starbucks maintains that union status does not influence its decision-making on store closures. The company plans to revitalize over 1,000 stores in the coming year, focusing on creating a more inviting atmosphere.
