Ald. Gardiner Rejects Apartment Building Pitched For Edgebrook After Tense Meeting
Ald. Jim Gardiner (45th) declared his opposition to a 48-unit apartment building proposed by Drexel Properties in Edgebrook following a heated community meeting. Residents voiced concerns about the project's compatibility with neighborhood character and potential traffic problems. While some supported the development as a means to revitalize downtown, others feared it would worsen existing issues. The five-story building would require a zoning change and include retail space and 30 parking spots.
Gardiner affirmed his dedication to community feedback, stating that the project is not a good fit for Edgebrook. Drexel Properties announced they would not move forward with the project. The proposal included one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, with rents ranging from $2,700 to $4,000. Community members suggested a preference for condos over rentals to foster neighborhood stability.
