Portage Park Elects Its First Pet Mayor, Eden The Dog
Portage Park held its first pet election, electing a dog named Eden as mayor, a move that reflects the community's pet-friendly spirit. The election took place at the Portage Park Farmers Market, where attendees voted by donating non-perishable food items, raising nearly 1,200 contributions for the Irving Park Food Pantry. Eden, a Great Pyrenees-Labrador mix, aims to promote animal rescues and spread positivity in the neighborhood, according to her owner, Katherine Cartwright. Cartwright, who donates proceeds from her Etsy shop to animal charities, emphasized Eden's joyful interactions with children and park visitors. The Friends of Portage Park Advisory Council initiated the election to honor the neighborhood's furry residents, which included over 60 candidates.
Sophie McNeill, the council's market manager, noted the diverse range of pets frequently seen in the area. Eden's term will last for one year, and she will be accompanied by Bronco, another dog from the community. This event not only celebrates pets but also fosters community engagement through charitable contributions.
