Casa Yucatn, A 98-Unit Affordable Housing Building, Breaks Ground In Pilsen

Chicago, ILLocal News

Casa Yucatán, a new affordable housing development, broke ground in Pilsen on Friday, aiming to address the area's housing crisis. The Resurrection Project is transforming a lot into an eight-story building that will provide 98 affordable apartments, with construction expected to finish by fall 2026. Mayor Brandon Johnson stated the project is crucial for ensuring that working families can remain in Pilsen amid rising rental costs. The apartments will cater to families earning 30-70 percent of the area median income, with rents ranging from $551 to $1,768 monthly. The development will also include amenities like a multi-purpose room, a playground, and indoor bicycle storage for 98 bikes.

Funding will come from private and public sources, including $15. 8 million from the city and support from the Illinois Department of Affordable Housing. The project is the first to utilize the city’s $1. 25 billion housing and economic development bond, reflecting a commitment to affordable housing. City Council approved the initiative in 2023, aiming to bring back residents who have been priced out of the community.
