Cottage Grove Back Open At 71st Street After 2-Year Bridge Project

Chicago, ILLocal News

Cottage Grove Avenue has reopened to traffic following a 29-month bridge replacement project by Norfolk Southern, which began in April 2023. The reopening applies to the stretch south of the six-way intersection at 71st Street, though minor repairs will prompt short, single-lane closures. Buses on the No. 4 Cottage Grove and No. X4 Cottage Grove Express routes resumed normal operations on September 28, restoring service to local residents.

Some community members previously voiced frustration over the lack of communication from Norfolk Southern and local officials regarding construction updates. Despite these concerns, many regular bus riders reported minimal impact from the detours. The project involved the replacement of eight rail bridges in Greater Grand Crossing. Meanwhile, 73rd Street remains closed under the Chicago Skyway, indicating ongoing infrastructure challenges in the area. The reopening marks a significant milestone for local traffic and transit services.
