Bridgeports Formerly Polluted Riverfront Park Is Now Thriving And Could Be Expanded
The Chicago Park District is advancing plans to expand Park No. 571 along Bubbly Creek, following a $500,000 renovation that introduced new fishing stations and a nature play area. Ald. Nicole Lee (11th) announced intentions to purchase a neighboring 3. 7-acre vacant lot, previously part of a gas plant, for park expansion once environmental remediation is complete.
This cleanup, managed by Peoples Gas, is expected to run through mid-2027. Park 571, which opened in 2016, has already transformed from a polluted site into a vibrant community space. Efforts to restore the river's ecosystem have led to increased biodiversity, with various fish species and wildlife returning to the area. The Clean Water Act of 1972 has played a crucial role in improving water quality in the Chicago River. Lee noted that the park attracts visitors due to its scenic views and unique location in Bridgeport.
Discussions about the future use of the gas plant site are ongoing, with Peoples Gas open to talks with the city regarding potential developments.
