Chicago, ILLocal News

Seven individuals have been charged with first-degree murder following a smash-and-grab incident at the Louis Vuitton store on Chicago's Magnificent Mile that resulted in a fatal car crash. The burglary took place early Thursday morning when suspects drove a pickup truck through the store's front, stealing nearly $700,000 in merchandise. A high-speed chase ensued, during which Dejuan Wingard, 30, collided with Mark Arceta's vehicle, killing the 40-year-old as he was en route to work. Arceta was reportedly heading to his last shift before his partner's scheduled delivery of their child. A GoFundMe campaign for Arceta's family has raised over $26,000 in response to his tragic death.

Authorities arrested all seven suspects at the scene of the crashes, underscoring the dangers of organized retail crime. The incident raised concerns about public safety and the economic impact of such crimes on the community. State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke emphasized the physical danger posed by these operations to residents and workers alike.
