West Side Elementary School Expands After-School Arts Programs Through Local Nonprofit
Nash Elementary School in Austin is launching new after-school art programs this week, supported by a $200,000 grant aimed at violence prevention. The Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, a nonprofit based in Bridgeport, will provide classes in graffiti, drumming, and African dance to engage at-risk students. Executive director Amy Rasmussen highlights the need for these programs, stating they will help students facing significant challenges become more engaged in learning. At least 80 students will benefit from 27 weeks of programming, integrating arts with academic and social-emotional learning. The initiative also addresses the reduction of arts resources in West Side schools, as noted by art teacher Hailey Rodden.
Additionally, classes will be offered to parents to develop skills related to observing and supporting their children's learning. The arts partnership previously provided courses during the school day through a separate grant. The overall goal is to foster creativity and confidence in students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.
