Andersonville Swedish Restaurant Svea Awarded 50,000 Historic Preservation Grant

Chicago, ILLocal News

Svea, a historic restaurant in Andersonville, has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Backing Historic Small Restaurants program, a partnership between American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This program aims to support small, independently owned restaurants in enhancing their historical buildings through various improvements. Known for its Swedish-inspired menu, Svea has served the community since the 1930s and plays a significant role in preserving local cultural heritage. Owner Scott Martin, who bought the restaurant in the late '90s, is still considering how to allocate the grant funds. The restaurant, along with Simon’s Tavern, has weathered the challenges posed by the pandemic with community support.

Svea operates from 7 a. m. to 2 p. m. , Wednesday through Sunday, continuing its legacy as a cherished local destination.

The grant underscores the importance of preserving community-rooted establishments that symbolize cultural pride. A full list of grant recipients is available through the program’s official channels.
