A federal immigration officer fatally shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez in Franklin Park after the man allegedly hit the officer with his vehicle while resisting arrest. U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that Villegas-Gonzalez, who was in the U. S.

illegally, had a criminal history that included three convictions for reckless driving. The officer fired in self-defense as he was dragged by the car, and Villegas-Gonzalez was later pronounced dead at Loyola Hospital. Governor JB Pritzker called the incident troubling and demanded a full accounting of the events surrounding the shooting. Local community leaders criticized the militarization of law enforcement, arguing that it jeopardizes public safety and trust. The Consulate General of Mexico confirmed Villegas-Gonzalez's identity and stated it is working with federal authorities to assist his family.

Hester Junior High School was placed on lockdown during the incident, and the FBI is assisting with the investigation. This shooting occurs during a time when ICE has ramped up operations in the Chicago area, leading to heightened tensions and protests.
