Wellington Greenway Could Connect Clybourn To Lakefront Trail With New Bike-Friendly Route

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is advancing plans for the Wellington Neighborhood Greenway, a 2. 5-mile biking route that will connect Clybourn Avenue to the Lakefront Trail. This initiative aims to create a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians by using paint, signage, and speed humps rather than major construction. Traffic counts indicate that nearly 400 cyclists traverse Wellington daily, underscoring its significance as a non-arterial east-west corridor in the neighborhood. Alderman Bennett Lawson mentioned that community discussions have been intense, particularly due to the greenway's location near the Illinois Masonic emergency department.

The project is part of the Lakeview Roscoe Village Master Plan, which has advocated for enhanced greenway connectivity over the past decade. CDOT will not remove parking or create new one-way restrictions, making it a low-impact solution. Resurfacing work on Wellington is already in progress, with CDOT expecting to install the necessary signage and markings this fall. This greenway is expected to improve visibility and awareness among drivers, promoting a safer environment for all road users.
