Without A Buyer, American Science Surplus Could Close Its Park Ridge Shop This Month
American Science & Surplus may close its Park Ridge location if a buyer does not come forward by the end of the month. Owner Pat Meyer noted that the novelty shop, which has served the community since 1937, has faced significant challenges, including declining online sales and the rise of competitors like Amazon. Despite raising over $190,000 through a GoFundMe campaign, moving costs proved prohibitive for downsizing. The store will stop all online and catalog sales, with the last chance for online orders on September 14. Meyer has successfully sold the Milwaukee and Geneva locations to store managers but has not found any employees interested in the Park Ridge shop.
He is currently in talks with two potential buyers and hopes to pass on the beloved store to someone who shares its passion. The shop has become a local landmark known for its unique offerings, from craft supplies to novelty toys. Meyer expressed his dismay at the prospect of closing the original location, emphasizing its importance to the community.
