New Bike Path Will Connect North Shore Channel Trail To Lakefront Trail Through Uptown

Chicago, ILLocal News

The city is on schedule to complete the Winnemac Avenue Neighborhood Greenway, a bike path connecting the Lakefront Trail to the North Shore Channel Trail. This 2. 5-mile route will provide safer biking options for families and children by using residential streets instead of busy avenues. Currently, construction remains on about 1 mile of the path between Damen Avenue and Broadway, with a completion target set for this year. The project includes features like advisory bike lanes and a contraflow lane for westbound cyclists, enhancing safety and accessibility.

Additionally, this initiative is part of the Mid Northeast Neighborhood Bikeways Network Project, which seeks to improve the bike network between Foster and Diversey avenues. Other planned routes include greenways on Grace Street and Wellington Avenue. Erica Schroeder, a spokesperson for the city's transportation department, confirmed that paint has already been applied to parts of the route. The project aims to create a lower-stress biking environment, promoting cycling as a viable transportation option in the community.
