The Mayor Of Mayfair Has Been Cleaning Up His Northwest Side Neighborhood For 26 Years

Chicago, ILLocal News

Wally Eliason, affectionately called “The Mayor of Mayfair,” has spent over 25 years cleaning his Northwest Side neighborhood. At 90, he is ready to pass the torch to younger community members, marking a significant transition for local activism. The Mayfair Park Advisory Council recently secured $5,000 to create a flower garden in his honor, which will feature benches made from a historic oak tree. Eliason, who grew up in Albany Park and served in the Air Force, began his community work motivated by boredom after retirement. His commitment transformed neglected areas, leading to safety improvements and a renewed sense of pride among residents.

Local volunteers, inspired by Eliason's dedication, helped establish a flower garden and improve public spaces. Jaime Chavez, a neighbor, referred to Eliason as a “blessing,” emphasizing the community's reliance on his efforts. The planned garden will stand as a testament to Eliason's lasting influence on Mayfair and its residents.
