Near West Side Condo Complex Marks 100 Years By Recreating Historic Water Street Market

University Commons commemorated the centennial of the South Water Market with a block party on August 24, 2025, recreating the historic atmosphere of the once-thriving produce hub. Attendees enjoyed a small produce stand, vintage vehicles, and entertainment from the Chicago Metro Chorus. Chloe Koegel, who helped organize the event, emphasized the importance of the complex's preserved architecture. The South Water Market operated from 1925 until 2001, becoming a significant site for produce distribution. In 2004, the buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places, reflecting their historical value.

The area has transformed significantly, drawing residents and businesses alike. Nhoan Truong, a former vendor, shared his memories of the neighborhood's past struggles with crime and congestion. He expressed pride in seeing his family continue to engage with the community by purchasing a condo in the development.
