Chicago Avenue In West Humboldt Park Getting Bike Lanes And Raised Crosswalks

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Chicago Department of Transportation will enhance Chicago Avenue in West Humboldt Park with a series of street improvements, including bike lanes and raised crosswalks, aimed at improving pedestrian safety. The project will cover a one-mile stretch from Pulaski Road to Kedzie Avenue and implement a "road diet" to mitigate speeding and traffic accidents. Planned features include curb bump-outs, painted bike lanes, and in-lane bus boarding islands, all designed to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. Construction is set to begin in spring 2026 and take about two years to complete. Feedback from local residents has been positive, with many expressing hope that the improvements will encourage community engagement and reduce crime.

The project aligns with two large affordable housing developments currently under construction, which will add 112 below-market-rate apartments to the area. Designers have integrated community feedback into their plans, ensuring that the improvements reflect local needs. This initiative represents a significant investment in the neighborhood, enhancing safety and accessibility while promoting local businesses.
