More Kennedy Expressway Lanes Reopen And Construction Could Wrap By Thanksgiving

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Illinois Department of Transportation confirmed that all lanes on the Kennedy Expressway north of Addison Street will reopen within a week, providing much-needed relief to drivers accustomed to heavy traffic. This reopening marks a significant milestone in the $169 million rehabilitation project, which aims to enhance the expressway from Ohio Street to the Edens Expressway junction. While this development is promising, some ramps and lanes will temporarily close overnight to facilitate the removal of the construction zone, causing anticipated delays. By the end of this construction season, the project will reach 70 percent completion, with an overall finish date projected for Thanksgiving. Key exits at Kimball, Armitage, Milwaukee Avenues, and Augusta Boulevard remain closed, as do entrances at Addison Street, Western Avenue, Fullerton, and North Avenues.

IDOT encourages drivers to plan for potential delays and allocate extra travel time. The ongoing construction aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve overall road safety. This project is part of a broader effort to maintain and upgrade infrastructure in the city.
