Here Are 5 Redesign Plans For 111th Street-Bishop Ford Interchange. Help Pick The Winner

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Illinois Department of Transportation proposed five redesign options for the 111th Street interchange at Interstate 94 in Pullman and South Deering, aiming to enhance traffic safety and connectivity. The proposals feature various interchange designs, including tight diamond and diverging diamond interchanges, with shared-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Officials reported nearly 1,500 crashes occurred within the study area from 2018 to 2022, underscoring the need for improvements. Two intersections on 111th Street were classified as high safety concerns, prompting this redesign initiative. Community engagement is crucial, and residents are encouraged to provide feedback until September 11 for inclusion in the official record.

Transportation officials believe that public input will lead to a more effective interchange system that benefits the community. The engineering and environmental study, initiated in 2022, is set to wrap up in late 2027, which is more than two years later than originally planned. The redesign also aims to improve access to nearby attractions like Harborside International Golf Center and Big Marsh Park.
