Archdiocese Lists Humboldt Parks St. Mark Parish For Sale For 6.7 Million

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Archdiocese of Chicago has placed the historic St. Mark Roman Catholic Church property in Humboldt Park on the market for $6. 7 million after its closure in 2022. The sale includes the church, rectory, and the neighboring Esmeralda Santiago Elementary School, which was previously St. Mark’s school.

The property has remained vacant since the parish’s consolidation under the archdiocese’s Renew My Church initiative, which aimed to address declining attendance and financial challenges. Upkeep and renovation costs for the property are estimated at over $1 million, prompting the decision to sell. Proceeds from the sale could provide crucial financial support for the newly formed Our Lady of Unity parish. Founded in 1894, St. Mark served primarily Latino and Puerto Rican communities and offered bilingual services and cultural events.

The property is zoned for residential redevelopment, allowing for the potential construction of up to 48 apartments. The future of the site remains uncertain, with no information on potential buyers disclosed by the archdiocese.
