Fire Breaks Out At North Park Homeless Encampment As Residents Prepare For September Clearing

Chicago, ILLocal News

A fire erupted at the Legion Park homeless encampment in North Park early Monday, causing damage to a wooden structure but no injuries. This incident marks the third fire at the encampment this year, where 20-25 residents live in makeshift homes. The Park District announced plans to enforce a ban on camping after 11 p. m. starting September 9, following heightened scrutiny after a July 28 fire.

Residents like Robert Bulanon and Tracey Alcoser expressed concerns about their uncertain futures as they prepare to relocate. Park District Spokesperson Michele Lemons stated that the closure aims to address safety risks, particularly due to the absence of nearby fire hydrants. Many residents believe that a few troublemakers are responsible for the recent fires, complicating the situation for those seeking stability. The encampment's closure follows previous displacements from other locations, highlighting a recurring challenge for homeless individuals in the area. As the September deadline approaches, residents face difficult choices about where to go next.
